Abstract


The purpose of this study was to determine students’ initial abilities, involved cognitive, psychomotor and affective abilities as well as the results of students' formative tests after being taught using a problem-based instruction (PBI). It is a descriptive research. The research instruments used were observation sheets, student worksheets, and pretest and posttest instruments. The population in this study were students of class VIII PGRI Seith which consisted of 3 classes with a total of 110 students. Meanwhile, the sample was 38 students from class VIIIc. The results showed: (1) The students' initial ability in the vibrations and waves topics before being taught using a problem-based learning was revealed to be failed; (2) After taught using the PBI, cognitive and psychomotor aspects that were obtained from the scores of students’ worksheets and formative tests on vibrations and waves showed that the students who have passed was above the qualification "sufficient"; (3) Meanwhile it was above the “good” in the affective aspect; and (4) Results of the formative test scores that was given after the teaching and learning process using a problem-based instruction model revealed that there were 92.11% of students who acquired “good” qualifications.
