IMPROVING VOCABULARY MASTERY THROUGH CONCEPTATTAINMENT MODEL

Abstract


The objective of this research is to find out if using Concept Attainment Model method is effective to improve students vocabulary mastery of the second grade at SMP Negeri 9 Palu. The population was the grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 9 Palu. The researcher applied a quasi-experimental design. The sample was VIII G as the control group which consisted of 29 students and VIII H as the experimental group which consisted of 29 students. The test was administered twice: pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed in order to find out the significant achievement of the students in the pre-test and the post-test. The experimental group was given the treatment by applying the Concept Attainment Model method, while the control group was taught vocabulary text without a certain method. The instrument used in collecting data was a test given as pre-test and post-test. The result of tests shows that the mean score of the experimental group was 48.80 from 19.13 in the pretest, and the control group was 39.65. from 21.27 in the pretest. This score shows, that the mean score of the experimental group is higher than the mean score of the control group on the posttest. By applying a one-tailed test at 0.05 level of significance with 56 degrees of freedom (df), it is found that the value of t-counted (2.19) is greater than t-table (1.66). It confirms that the research hypothesis was accepted. Based on the result, it concludes that the Concept Attainment Model is effective to improve students' vocabulary of the second grade students at  SMP Negeri 9 Palu.
